In September of 2011 I walked the 500 mile proposed high Speed rail route from Los Angeles to San Francisco with two of my brothers. We camped along the way on farms, beside roads, at state parks, in peoples houses, and roadside motels. We carried everything on our backs and documented each day by vido, each night posting that days video documentation to a website and YouTube. 

The project was prompted by conflicted feelings about the prospect of family land taken by eminent domain and used for what would be a major public work.  I live in a city and love the city, and yet I have an undeniable connection to this particular parcel of land and, in general, an affection for rural and agricultural places. The neighbors and family friends I grew up around were deeply troubled by this and I was interested in the very complex reasons for their reactions. I also assumed with some of them that the sentimental, cultural and historical value of this land would not be seriously considered within the planning and debate processes.

I began to look for detailed information on the project and found it to be inadequately clear and accessible. I wasn't the only one who was a little frustrated and confused. What would be a historically significant public work was being debated on the basis of widespread hearsay, speculation, inaccurate information, and politically charged gossip.

A journalist following this controversy made an observation from this situation, saying the high speed rail had sparked a "culture war between urban and rural people".

Observing all these debates and reading between the lines, it seemed that what was largely at stake for most people, was the way they wanted to live, and how the this proposed rail either threatened or enabled this. As clear as this seemed to me it was strange, then, that the personal perspectives and desires were mostly articulated through (or shrouded in) left and right political rhetoric and rationale. The mixture of the personal and political, urban and rural, cultural and economic issues were an interesting problematic but unfortunately the discussions were muddled, unproductive and alienating.

I became really interested in this situation and wanted to get involve in a way that might address these problems. Walking the route seemed to speak to some of the needs and present some interesting possibilities.

After six months of planning and mapping my brothers and I set out to document our walk and conversations. 

Our walk was an open and moving dialogue where anyone en route could contribute their personal perspectives and local knowledge. The material we gleaned and the growing media attention began to reach the attention of the Rail Authorities and in fact was used to inform some of their planning and research. The walk provided valuable insight into the microcosms that make up the vast amount of space between two focal points and brought awareness to the complexities of the rail project and especially what was underlying the debates that surrounded it.

This project asipired to being a multi-purpose, multi-functional work that would fulfill multiple desires - divergent but interrelated. I proposed to the gallery that I use my production/artist fee to sit poolside at a holiday destintion for the duration of the opening. The fee was just enough to make a series of inkjet prints of cut-out pools to be exhibited, to fly to one of the resort destinations of one of these pools for the night of the opening, and to return the next day. Those who attended the opening were made aware of this.

The project emerged from an immediate experience  and observation of how 'emerging' artists worked and supported themselves, the competing economies they work between, the types and propotions of work and leisure available to them, and polarized views of the function and value of artists in Glasgow.

At the same time I needed rest, and as an American living in the Uk I wanted to experience a British holiday, to better understand it and see if I could find some rest for myself in it. 

Epoch of Rest is a title borrowed from the William Morris novel 'News from Nowhere, or, an Epoch of Rest : being some chapters from a utopian romance'.

This is an ongoing work in progress.

It started in May 2011 when I made a public proposal inviting the unemployed to build an organisation that would be in the business of breaking world records. The initial world record would be the three-legged race. The project was designed to bridge the gap between unemployment and work, to build and share skills in doing something extraordinary, and to penetrate existing attitudes towards unemployment by visualizing a statistic in this way, and by pleasurably achieving headway towards employment in earning something other than monetary return. </description>

While looking for a place to rent In 2009 my wife and I were contacted by some friends informing us that their elderly next door neighbour had a stroke and would need to go into a home and that her daughter was looking for tenants.
We got in touch and she invited us to view the house. The home was just as it was left. Every surface was covered and every wall was filled, there were countless objects and ephemera evidencing a life lived in one place for 65 years. 

We found ourselves ucomfortably in this role of displacement and complicit in a drastic change in the history of this family. They were struggling with the thought of what to keep and what to throw out. 

I suggested that I could come in prior to moving in and photographically archive every object on display in the house condensing everything into a single image. 

The framed image was given to Muriel's mother when we moved in and a book was also made for the rest of the family.

Versus was a project that I helped design and facilitate with Market Gallery. The project was concerned with collectivism, collaboration and competition. The gallery invited two collectives (Ironbratz and The Mutual) into two respective spaces for a month long residency/competition where every week we presented to the two groups a theme for them to respond to. At the end of the week each group presented/curated their responses/activites. On the 'storefront' windows of their respective spaces was a scoreboard where the gallery publicly judged their efforts.

The Club of Queer Trades / Past Master

Glasgow Festival Of Visual Art, Glasgow UK 2010

While I was a committee member of Market Gallery in Glasgow I invited Portland,Oregon Artist Eric Steen over on residency for the Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art. During the festival Eric had facilitated a project involving a "Pub School' that culminated in tranforming the gallery into a temporary Pub where Glasgow homebrewers were invited to showcase their beers to the public for one night. All the beers were served and displayed with great care and available for free. The school and pub was a way of looking at the craft of beer along with its cultural, economical, social and geographical functions, problems and potentials in Glasgow. 

For my part I asked Ken Duncan, Head Brewer of The Inveralmond Brewery to help me brew a beer based on two works of fiction that I felt resonated with this project.  Together we crafted and brewed two recipes for beers based on The Club of Queer Trades by GK Chesterton and Past Master by RA Lafferty.

Doers and/of Doings: A Pop-Up School was a month-long project supported by Sierra Metro Gallery in Edinburgh.

In Janurary 2011 I sent a call out inviting people at an 'impasse' in their life and work to join a month-long school where they would all become both teachers and students of each other. We went on to collectively craft individual curriculums of actions and experiences for each person based on the groups experiences and existing knowledge. These were designed to bring each participant through their 'impasse'. They were carried out and presented to the public at Stills Gallery in Edinbrugh.
